Chasing Clouds and Light

I have some exciting news to share! Some of you know I have been writing a book for the Crowsnest Historical Society. It is a project I have been working on since 2015.

The book is about the renowned Crowsnest Pass photographers, Thomas and Lena Gushul. The couple operated photo studios in Coleman and Blairmore from 1918 to the early 1960s. I am pleased to announce that presales are now available for Chasing Clouds and Light – The Photography of Thomas and Lena Gushul, with an anticipated launch in January 2025. All proceeds from sales of this book go to the Crowsnest Historical Society, so it can continue to preserve and promote the unique cultural history of the Crowsnest Pass.

The glossy, hard-cover coffee table book contains 245 pages, featuring more than 270 of the finest photographs in the Gushul collections, some of which have not been seen in print since their negatives were developed in the darkroom by the Gushuls many decades ago. The book includes detailed information on Thomas and Lena Gushul, their family, and photo studios while showcasing some of the extraordinary photographic works they produced.

The Gushul’s photographs are like windows into the past, revealing glimpses into the rich history of the Crowsnest Pass as it unfolded during the first half of the twentieth century. Every Gushul photograph tells a story, whether it is of people, places, or events. As an added feature, the first chapter covers information on other early photographers who worked in the Crowsnest Pass. A book trailer video with information on ordering copies can be viewed on the Crowsnest Museum’s YouTube channel.
